Buying new Footwear?

Choosing footwear which is comfortable, practical as well as aesthetically appealing can be quite a challenge. However diabetics have other factors to consider as well before a shoe should be brought. For example, a diabetic with reduced foot sensation may have great difficulty in assessing whether a shoe is fitting correctly. An ill-fitting shoe may cause rubbing and pressure on various parts of their feet.

Some points to consider before buying footwear.

  1. Do the shoes allow you to wiggle your toes freely?
If not, check the depth, width and length of the shoe.
  2. Does your heel sit comfortably in the shoe without excessive movement/
A shoe with a good retaining medium such as a lace or buckle should hold the foot firmly, but not tightly in position.
  3. Is the upper of the shoe soft enough to allow for some expansion/
Although a soft upper is an asset, when buying a shoe it should not replace correct fitting. It may feel comfortable in the store, however as is often the case, this type of footwear becomes increasingly uncomfortable with wear.
  4. Are there any rough seams over the toes for example which may cause irritation/
Poor stitching may cause problems as the foot rubs.
  5. Will the footwear allow for a thick pair of socks or orthotics with out cramping the feet?
  6. Have the shoes been fitted by knowledgeable staff?
Try and find an assistant who can fit footwear correctly. If you are unsure as to where to buy your shoes, ask your chiropodist, he/she will advise you on the most appropriate stores in your area.

A few factors to consider before buying new footwear:

  1. Shoes should not have to be "broken in". Do not accept shoes which feel uncomfortable.
  2. Wear new shoes for about 2-3 hours at a time, inspecting your feet for any pressure points.
  3. Before putting them on, check them inside for bumps, small stones etc.
  4. Slippers are generally poor for your feet if worn for any length of time. A light casual shoe with a fastener is much better.
